Is In Home Senior Care A Better Option Than Nursing Home?

Families are usually left with two different options when it comes to taking care of the senior ones in the family. The first and most common option is nursing homes or old age homes.

A nursing home or old age home is something like a hostel or rehabilitation centre for the old age. In such as setting, the aged person is accommodated along with several other aged members. They have a common timing for eating, for entertainment, sleeping, etc. A few nurses are appointed to take care of the aged ones.

The second option is in-home senior care. Here, the old person is cared by a single person. The caregiver remains with the senior as long as he/she needs it. Families hire in home elder caregivers from licensed agencies. Normally, the caregiver is a registered nurse.

Having said this, here are the benefits of in home senior care in brief.

Affordable

Most people send their elderly to nursing homes considering the financial benefits it has. They think that a nursing care home is rather cheaper as compared to hiring an in home elder care service. This is not always correct though. When you send an aged person to a nursing home, you are supposed to pay for his/her accommodation, food, nursing care, medicines, etc. The total nursing home fees can be bigger than you expect.

On the other hand, if you hire an in home senior care service and have a registered nurse visit your aged parents every day, you only need to pay the salary of the caregiver. You do not have to pay any additional fee for the accommodation and food.

Unless your loved senior member is bedridden and needs 24-hour observation, you may need not a caregiver round the clock. You only need to find a caregiver who can be present when you are away, mostly during the daytime of weekdays.

Now, you know the benefits of in home senior care against nursing homes. If you are planning to hire an in home personal care giver for your elderly, do some research about the prospective care giving agencies. Make sure that the agency is both authorized and reputed. Similarly, ensure that the caregiver is a registered nurse who knows how to administer basic medications. Reference is the best way to find a recognized in-home elder care agency. So ask your friends or relatives for reference.
